Stieglitz served as chairman of the Chicago section of the American Chemical Society in 1904 and as national ACS president in 1917.
He was awarded the Willard Gibbs Medal in 1923.
He was the younger brother of the photographer Alfred Stieglitz. An archive deposited at the University of Arizona by their nephew Herbert Small includes a photocopy of the Stieglitz genealogy, a biography of Julius Stieglitz, and material on Alfred and his associates.
